Let’s go back… back into time:

It’s Wednesday August 4th, 2010. It’s the last Tuesday before I get hitched and I’m on the Calgary C-train heading out of downtown – home from work. I’m talking loud on my cell and I have a transit cop standing next to me telling me to get off the phone.

“Len… give me a call back if you can get that exhaust kit over to Mike… I’ve gotta go. I’m being escorted off the C-train.”

Next thing I know I’m standing on a train platform trying to explain to the officer why I don’t have a train pass on me. I’m telling a pretty convincing tall tale about how my train pass is my wallet, which is in my truck, which is at my stop. This is not true. My wallet is in my pocket and I don’t have a train pass because I was on the phone with Mike the Mechanic when I got on the train and had to run to catch it.

She lets me go with a stern warning which is good because I just committed 700 dollars to a stainless steel exhaust system.

Mike’s phone call was to inform that he is ready to fire the engine and needed an exhaust system sooner rather than later. Len called back sometime later to inform me that the exhaust would be seven days in arriving.

Not sure what Mike’s plan was given the news on the exhaust I just focused on work and the wedding. Then, at 4 PM Mountain Time, August 5th, 2010 (where were you?) my cell rang and through a loud background droning I heard “Angus?!…. Mike!…. Hear that? That’s your dad’s car! Say hello! Oil pressure is good and it runs great!”

30 years.

After I got off the phone with Mike I had to take a long moment by myself. To be quite honest – I fell apart. There have been three moments this year where I have been overwhelmed… two of them were that week. The other was at the wedding while talking about Krista and my family and how supportive they’ve been. The third was July 5th when James, my now boss, phoned me to finally inform me that they wanted me to start work (after I got off the phone).

The summer has been a whirlwind and it just continues. The wedding was one of those things that I am very surprised that it came off as well as it did. The odds were against it. I was stuck on what to get my groomsmen for gifts, as is the tradition (who invented this?). I, as a groomsman, have received Leatherman knives and flasks so I didn’t want to rehash those. After a Saturday of looking around I finally settled on camouflage shaving kits with a bottle of Gibson’s Rye (Whiskey Yanks) stuffed inside.

I’m not sure I mentioned this but I had five groomsmen and if they each were from separate villages each one would be picked to represent their respective village in the county drinking competition.

I made the mistake of handing out these gifts at rehearsal dinner. I also made the mistake (some time ago) to have the groomsmen stay over the night before so we’d all be together in the morning…. Do you see where this is going? For good measure my brothers, Neal and Lachlan came over too. Oh! And I almost forgot – my mom asked me to load all the leftover beer from the rehearsal dinner into my truck. If this evening was a thunderstorm George Clooney and Marky Mark would be sailing a fishing vessel into it.

To cut to the chase… and to exclude a story that should only be told in person and only right before Will Smith waves that memory wand in your face… the next day every person in the house felt like they had just been hit by a large truck.

We pulled it together because we really had no choice. After pancakes, sausage, fruit and Red Bull we were somewhat presentable….

To be continued….

Stay tuned…

A Couple of Weeks Off

With the wedding staring me down and little news from the front, I need to take a couple weeks off from the blog. I will be back Tuesday August 17th with loads of news and a ring.
